Mental Illness Awareness Week: Anxiety Disorders
Day 2: Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are increasingly common among children and teens. Today, we’ll explore what these disorders look like and how you can help.
Signs
- Excessive Worry: Your child may worry about a wide range of things, from school performance to social interactions, often imagining worst-case scenarios.
- Physical Symptoms: Complaints of headaches, stomachaches, or even nausea without a clear medical reason.
- Difficulty Sleeping: Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, often due to racing thoughts.
Parental Guidance
Anxiety can be debilitating for children. Encourage your child to talk openly about their fears and worries. Teach relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness. Consult a healthcare provider for a diagnosis and consider cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as a treatment option. Medication may also be prescribed depending on the severity.
